I saw some guy test that shield somewhere (cant remember where) and he noticed no difference so you might save some money on that. There is also an OEM version available that does not have the shield on it and is a bit cheaper. Now the hardware itself, I have the retail version with the red shield on it. The way I have it configured now it starts to sound like a better DT770 with a wider soundstage. The Z really extends the low range of the DT880 headphones by a lot. The bass got much better than I expected from this type of open headphones. It can really give it punch and this pulsating bass experience, like it almost makes the headphones and the room shake with it. Now the Z does a quite alright job powering the DT880 and the stock equalizer can bring forward the bass surprisingly nice. The DT880 by itself is also lean on bass because its an open/semi-open headphone. What I found is that the DT880 are pretty flat headphones and the Z gives a pretty flat sound.

With the Z the SBX pro studio software you have a basic equalizer which gives you more out of the box options to manipulate the sound.

The xtreme music drivers provided a bass volume slider that increased bass but also quickly the muddyness (the same for other software that could increase the bass). With the X-fi I used to crack up the bass for a bit. With standard settings I doubt I could pick one over the other in a blind test. Once you disable these effects it starts to sound like a normal soundcard, very much like the X-fi.

When you install the drivers, effects like Surround are standard enabled. Out of the box the card sounds terrible but I already knew it would. I now have the soundblaster Z (retail version) and have been listening to it for a while. Here a follow up post in case somebody has the same question and for the general internet of things:

Asus Xonar cards appear to have good reviews too.īasically I'm looking for some advice on comparable products or maybe better ones (in the Fiio E10k price range). The Fiio E10k looks nice to me but I don't know how well I'll be able to control the bass volume with that. With the Xtreme music I increased the bass volume because I liked it that way so I'd like to see that on the replacement as well. Most important criterion is that it's not going to sound less good than it did with the Xtreme music card when it was still functioning properly. Now that it's officially dead I'm looking for a new thing to drive my headphones.

I figured it was a driver problem as I've had those before, but I couldn't get it fixed and installing it in another computer had the same result.

It produces a horrible deformed noise at maximum volume. I really enjoy their sound and comfort but unfortunately my soundcard (Creative X-fi Xtreme music) is failing. I have been reading these forums and recently purchased a DT880 (250 ohm) edition headphones.
